Overview

Product Description

The Hi-Low Alarm is a DIY electronics kit that sounds a beeper when the input voltage to the circuit has become either too small or too large. The use of two onboard potentiometers allows for setting the detection voltages, and a third potentiometer allows for changing the rate of the beeper. At the same time, two outputs are provided (indicating a high or low alarm), and these can be connected to other external circuits such a relays and microcontrollers.

This kit is powered by a separate 5V supply, and this can be provided with the use of either the Simple Power Supply kit or the Simple Power Module SMD Trainer. The voltage being monitored is provided separately to the power supply, and this input has a 100Ω series protection resistor to protect against sudden current spikes.

Applications

  • This kit is excellent for those who need an alarm that monitors a sensor, voltage, or even a current (with the use of a current-to-voltage converter). For example, this kit can be used to detect if a door has been left open, the current level of fluid in a tank, or the position of a potentiometer (such as a control knob). This is also ideal for those who want to learn about voltage detectors, comparators, and logic circuits that convert analogue signals into digital signals. Finally, the Hi-Low Alarm is great for those learning electronics and those who want to get some soldering practice.
  • Education and training – Useful for teaching comparators, window detection and threshold alarms, while providing practical experience with through-hole soldering, component identification and PCB assembly.
  • Project integration – Suitable for projects such as Power Supply Monitor, Water Tank Controller, Classroom Demonstrator, and other designs where the following function is useful: Adjustable high/low voltage alarm that monitors an input and sounds an alarm when the signal moves outside the selected range

Notes

  • Electrical specifications are nominal and may vary with component tolerances, supply voltage, load and operating conditions.
  • The product is supplied in kit form and requires soldering and assembly before use.
  • Check component values and observe the polarity or orientation of ICs, diodes, LEDs, transistors and electrolytic capacitors before applying power.
